Early Orthodontic Treatment for Lifelong Health

Early Orthodontic Treatment for Lifelong Health

For kids, sleep, airway and TMJ symptoms often seem “normal”. They’re not. Early treatment used to be 12. Then it was 7. Now we see kids as young as 2.  I want to spot airway and jaw problems as soon as possible so we can reverse them and correct the issues before they become chronic.

A Hidden Epidemic: Sleep Disorders and Their Underestimated Impact

According to Yale Medicine Pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) can severely disrupt a child’s quality of sleep, leading to tiredness and crankiness during the day. If untreated, it can result in other health issues, including poor growth. OSA affects 3 to 6 percent of children and is associated with repetitive narrowing of the airways. Common consequences include attention problems and, in some cases, hyperactivity.
According to The American Medical Association, approximately 30 million people in the United States have sleep apnea, but only 6 million are diagnosed with the condition.
According to National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) – part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) – the prevalence of temporomandibular joint and muscle disorder (TMJD) is between 5% and 12%. These disorders are at least twice as prevalent in women as men.
According to The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Sleep plays a vital role in children’s mental and physical health. Insufficient sleep can affect children’s physical health, cognitive capacity, socioemotional processes, and behavioral functioning, impacting their overall development and well-being.

A Note from Dr. Jim Bieneman

I’m proudly a second-generation dentist. Growing up, my father owned his own dental practice and I was inspired by his passion for the profession and his ability to help patients. Beyond his practice, my dad taught me about the gift of health. Seeing the challenges he constantly overcame as a type 1 diabetic, he instilled in me to value good health as one of life’s greatest assets. Although he passed away during my senior year of dental school, my dad was my champion and my guide. He taught me that I was at dental school to learn the fundamental skills, but my practice of dentistry would be a lifelong learning journey. Over the course of countless continuing education hours, I’ve focused on the areas where my patients experienced the most misdiagnosis: TMJ, sleep, airway, and feeding (for infants and children). Along the way, I’ve also become dual board certified through the American Board of Craniofacial Pain and the American Board of Craniofacial Dental Sleep Medicine, further highlighting my dedication to the highest standards of care.
I’m committed to preventative care for all ages and especially early interventions for children. In some cases, care needs the support of multiple providers, and I advocate for collaborative care and integrated treatment strategies. It’s my goal to provide my patients with care that provides long term health. It is my sincere pleasure to partner with my patients on improving their wellness, and I hope to see you soon.
