Children OSA

Sadly, it is not just appearance that is affected when a child’s face does not develop properly. Improper growth and development of the face and jaws can lead to sleep disordered breathing conditions including children sleep apnea.

Children obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a sleep disorder in which a child’s breathing is partially or completely blocked repeatedly during sleep. The condition is due to narrowing or blockage of the upper airway during sleep.

Do you notice any of these symptoms while your child is sleeping?

  • Snoring
  • Pauses in breathing
  • Restless sleep
  • Snorting, coughing or choking
  • Mouth breathing
  • Bed wetting
  • Sleep terrors

Does your child have any of these problems?

  • Poor performance in school
  • Difficulty paying attention
  • Learning problems
  • Behavioral problems
  • Poor weight gain
  • Hyperactive

If your child is showing signs of any of the above symptoms, he or she may be suffering from children OSA or another sleep disordered breathing syndrome.

Finally, clinical research has shown that as many as 25-25% of children diagnosed with ADHD actually have undiagnosed OSA which is causing their symptoms.

If your child has been diagnosed with ADD or ADHD, we strongly recommend a full orthodontic exam and physician prescribed sleep study.
