Poor Sleep & Snoring

Poor sleep can be detrimental to your health. Symptoms of poor sleep can include and are not limited to sluggish memory, impaired cognitive functions, mood swings, depleted immune system, lack of libido, weight gain, increased blood pressure, drowsiness, and poor balance.  Children may also suffer from poor sleep, resulting in bed wetting, behavioral problems at school, headaches, constantly tired, suffer from ADHD type symptoms, these are just a few of symptoms that kids can experience.

All of these symptoms can impair our daily lives and make easy tasks difficult. Poor sleep may derive from Sleep Apnea, Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS), Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD), excessive alcohol consumption, and Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Snoring can be defined as the dull/course noise emitting from our throats and nasal passages as we sleep. Snoring can be a relatively harmless annoyance but it can be a chronic problem. Snoring may be an indication of a larger, more serious health problem.

These problems could be…

  • Tongue-tie (even in adults!)
  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea, (OSA)
  • Over consumption of alcohol
  • Anatomy of mouth; a small airway
  • Chronic nasal congestion
  • Poor Sleep Position
  • Sleep Deprivation

Generally speaking snoring is a big symptom of OSA, but snoring by itself does not necessarily mean an individual has OSA. But if you snore AND have these symptoms it is possible you are suffering from OSA

  • Daytime drowsiness
  • Paused breathing during sleep
  • Headaches upon waking
  • Morning sore throat
  • Evening chest pain
  • High blood pressure
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Snoring is loud enough to disrupt partner’s sleep
  • Children with ADHD behavior (lack of concentration, poor educational performance, bad behavior problems in general)

These problems need to be addressed, we highly suggest that you seek medical consultation if you or your child is suffering from any of these symptoms.
